Recent scrutiny of aspartame, one of the most widely used artificial sweeteners, has diet soda drinkers questioning whether they should ditch their beverage of choice. The World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has reported that aspartame could possibly cause cancer. The WHO’s Joint Expert Committee on Food Additives maintains aspartame is safe within the recommended daily limit of 40 milligrams per kilogram of body weight.
