Since 2011 Jane Fusilero, RN, MSN, MBA, NEA-BC, vice president of patient care services and chief nursing officer, has revolutionized the nursing team at Moffitt Cancer Center. Her transformational leadership led to Magnet® designation, which honors outstanding health care organizations for nursing professionalism, teamwork, quality patient care and innovations in nursing practices. Only 8% of U.S. hospitals achieve this status and patients rely on Magnet designation as the ultimate credential for high-quality nursing.  Fusilero also initiated weekly meetings made up of patient care services directors to address structure and process changes to improve patient outcomes.

The Florida Nurses Association (FNA) recently recognized Fusilero with an Administrative Nursing ICON award in honor of its 110th anniversary. Recipients of this award:

  • Demonstrate excellent team building and management skills
  • Enhance the work environment for nurses
  • Engage staff in decision-making
  • Maintain a stable workforce

Fusilero is responsible for more than 1,000 nurses who specialize in clinical care, education and administration. Nurses say they look up to Fusilero because she is a dependable, passionate leader, who supports diversity and inclusion in the workplace.

Registered nurse Louisa Rattini-Reich says, “Jane recognizes talents in people they don’t know they have and puts them to work. A transformational leader is someone who is a visionary and inspires confidence through motivation. Jane is the epitome of a transformational leader. The culture she’s built to support nurses at Moffitt Cancer Center shows her vision. Jane holds us to a high level of performance and she has those same expectations for herself.”

That sentiment is echoed by Joel Stettler, RN, BSN, OCN.  “Working with Jane has been an honor during my time here at Moffitt,” says Stettler. “Jane has been an incredible leader; encouraging professional growth amongst the nurses at Moffitt She’s led the way to Moffitt’s designation as a center of nursing excellence.”

The FNA Nurse ICON Awards celebration was held on Sept. 13, 2019, in Howey-in-the-Hills, Florida.
