Moffitt Cancer Center has unveiled the name of its new 775-acre global innovation center in Pasco County: Speros FL. The name is a derivative of the Latin verb “Sperare,” meaning “to hope” or “to look forward to.”

It embodies the future of revolutionary cancer treatment and research at Moffitt, according to Dr. Patrick Hwu, Moffitt president and CEO.

“You cannot separate cancer research and treatment from hope, which is the root of the name Speros FL, and the driving force behind all that we do at Moffitt Cancer Center,” Hwu said. “Our vision is to be the global epicenter for personalized oncology care and leading research that will revolutionize the way we prevent, find and treat cancer. We look forward to breaking ground on this innovative community and are proud to announce the name, which is an important step in this historic project.”

Located in Pasco County with convenient access to Tampa International Airport and major interstates, Speros FL will be a monumental-sized campus, featuring 16 million square feet of lab, office, manufacturing and clinical space, with the potential to add classrooms, teaching kitchens, health clubs and a performing arts center.

The historic campus will serve as a convener of the best and brightest minds in cancer research and treatment through deliberate placemaking, open vibrant spaces, and unmatched opportunities for development and growth.

The state-of-the-art, collaborative center for groundbreaking research is the largest in Moffitt’s 36-year history. Over the course of its 30+-year, multiphased development, Speros FL will expand Moffitt’s global footprint and increase its impact exponentially. A dynamic hub for biotech and life sciences enterprises will meet at the intersection of medicine, pharma, education, research, commerce, venture, incubation/acceleration and wellness.

Phase one of development is expected to begin in mid- to late 2023, with the construction of various facilities comprising 650,000 square feet of the total 1.5 million square feet planned for phase 1. This will include at least 300,000 square feet dedicated to research space.

Moffitt has accumulated a vast breadth of experience in treating more than 100 unique cancers and conditions in patients from all 67 Florida counties, across all 50 states and in more than 130 countries. In 2022 alone, the center saw more than 598,000 outpatient and screening visits.
