Founder H. Lee Moffitt rallies a tour of Moffitt Cancer Center at SouthShore. The new location will make cancer care more convenient for patients in the area.

When its doors open on Jan. 27, Moffitt Cancer Center at SouthShore will be ready to welcome patients with all cancer types and provide services comparable to the larger Magnolia Campus in Tampa.

The 75,000-square-foot facility at 2709 E. College Ave. in Ruskin will be home to 18 exam rooms and 10 bays strictly for blood draws, all readily available on opening day.

“We’ll also have our radiology suites available on that first day, one linear accelerator and one CT simulator ready for patients,” said Jazmin Calzada, director of Nursing and Ambulatory Clinic Operations. “We want patients to realize that we are a full service clinic in the heart of Ruskin.”

Moffitt at SouthShore will offer a wide range of services to patients, including cancer screenings, diagnostic imaging, blood draw and clinical labs, medical oncology clinics, radiation therapy and infusion services.

By bringing what is called an ambulatory clinic, or a clinic separate from the cancer center’s larger campuses, into the south Hillsborough community, Moffitt hopes to make cancer care more convenient and less stressful for patients in that area.

“Moffitt at SouthShore is 30 miles south of the Magnolia Campus,” Calzada said. “So that’s 30 miles patients from this part of the county will not have to drive in order to get the cancer care they need.”

Recently, Moffitt executives toured the construction site at SouthShore and learned that the project is on track for its early 2025 opening. Dr. Patrick Hwu, president and CEO of Moffitt, expressed excitement about the progress.

“This is a wonderful addition to Moffitt’s services and an opportunity for us to expand our mission to prevent and cure cancer in south Hillsborough County,” Hwu said. “It’s convenient to the residents here who need top of the line cancer care and it’s easily accessible from the interstate.”

Moffitt at SouthShore sits about a mile from I-75 in Ruskin and will have nearly 350 parking spaces for staff, patients and caregivers.

Oncologists specializing in all cancer types will be available on opening day, and Moffitt is working to hire for more positions at the facility.

“We will see some familiar faces at SouthShore when it opens and we’ll also see some new faces,” Calzada said. “Not only is this an opportunity to provide cancer care to this part of the county, it is also providing job opportunities.”
