Miles for Moffitt Sets Record-Breaking Numbers

Miles for Moffitt had over 9,500 participants and 430 teams who raised $1.6 million and counting for cancer research at Moffitt.

Inspiration was the word of the day, as thousands gathered for Moffitt Cancer Center’s 18th annual Miles for Moffitt presented by AutoNation.

With the perfect weather for a morning run or walk, this year’s event saw record-breaking numbers with more than 9,500 participating in person or virtually and forming 430 teams.

The annual event raised more than $1.6 million, surpassing its goal of $1.5 million. In addition to being the presenting sponsor, AutoNation also went the extra mile this year and raised $260,000.

“We express our deep gratitude for the overwhelming support received for this year’s Miles for Moffitt,” said Maria Muller, president of the Moffitt Foundation. “The unprecedented numbers truly reflect the community’s commitment to innovative cancer research and lifesaving new therapies.”

The opening ceremony was kicked off by returning host Joshua Rivera of Moffitt, and 10 Tampa Bay’s Frank Wiley and Caitlin Lockerbie. The cancer center also welcomed for the first time anchor Marianny Egurrola from Univision.

A fan favorite, the Lennar Party Deck kept the crowd dancing as DJ Ekin from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers ensured the party vibes lasted throughout the morning.

Following the Zumba warmup, leaders from the cancer center took the main stage to express gratitude to the community for their ongoing support.

The Mole Patrol team was on-site and provided 183 free cancer screenings.

Participants had the opportunity to capture memories with beloved Tampa Bay mascots ThunderBug, Raymond, DJ Kitty and Captain Fear. Meanwhile, Moffitt’s youngest supporters enjoyed the excitement, dancing and Kids Dash with Raymond.

During the awards ceremony, the cancer center gave the Spirit of Miles for Moffitt award to team #BucStrong. The team was formed in 2021 after Alexis Buchman was diagnosed with glioblastoma. Participating in Miles for Moffitt for three years, the team has 183 members and raised over $15,000 this year. They were given the award for their hard work, kindness and dedication to the cancer center.

The event closed with a tribute ceremony, where Moffitt held a moment of silence for those we’ve lost and for those who face the disease.

There’s still time to contribute to the 2023 Miles for Moffitt. Fundraising will continue through Jan. 31, 2024.
