Every Feb. 4, organizations around the world join forces for one common goal – World Cancer Day. Started in 2000 at the World Summit Against Cancer, this global initiative was created to unite countries, communities and people in raising awareness about cancer.

World Cancer Day honors patients, survivors and those who have lost their battle. And the day’s aim is to promote early detection, access to care and improving research in hopes of having a world with no cancer.

“World Cancer Day is a remarkable initiative that aims to prevent cancer deaths through spreading awareness and providing education about cancer,” said Maria Muller, president of the Moffitt Foundation. “We also use it as a time to educate our donors on ways they can join the fight and help us get one step closer to finding a cure.”

This year the Moffitt Foundation has partnered with the Anthony R. Abraham Foundation for a $50,000 challenge.

If Moffitt can get 200 donors to join in on the fight against cancer on Feb. 4, the Anthony Abraham Foundation has agreed to donate $50,000 to the cancer center.

“We are incredibly grateful to the Anthony Abraham Foundation for their generosity in supporting Moffitt. I have tremendous faith in our Moffitt community, there’s no doubt we will meet our goal,” said Muller.

Although some may choose to give a monetary donation during World Cancer Day, there are multiple ways to take action, including advocating for cancer awareness through social media, showing support for a loved one with cancer or educating yourself about cancer.
